Historical overview

Several urban legends tell the story of the Krestovsky (Cross) Island name. One of them is telling that before even the city was founded there was a Chapel on this island, topped by a large crucifix. The next one tells that when the private residence of Tsarevna Natalya Alexeevna was being raised, there was a huge crucifix found below the ground at the construction site. There also is a version that the Island was names so after the cross-shaped lake located in its center.

Previously Kemskaya Street was named Alexandrovskaya (Alexander’s), and was named so after one of the owners of Krestovsky Island, from Beloselsky-Belozersky Prince’s family. But on April 16, 1886 the street was renamed after the city Kem’, located in Arkhangelsk province.
