Historical background

Petrograd side consists of several islands, the biggest among them is Petrogradsky, and the most famous is Hare’s Island (Zayatchiy ostrov), where St.Peter and Paul’s fortress and Cathedral are situated. That is where the city started.

Aptekarsky Island and Graftio Street are located in the northern part of the islands' complex. This is the historical part of St. Petersburg, which was given by Peter the Great to the Medical Chancellery and the Main Pharmacy. Now the St. Petersburg Botanical garden (previously – Pharmacy Paddock) is situated here – the parent of the Russian Pharmacology.

In early XX century Graftio Street was named Permskaya, but later it was renamed after the famous soviet engineer, the constructor of soviet hydroelectric power stations, academician Henrich Osipovich Graftio.

One of the buildings on the street is given to the branch od St. Petersburg Museum of Theatre and Musical Art; this is the memorial house of famous Russian opera singer Fyodor Chaliapin (Graftio str., 2b).
