Several urban legends tell the story of the Krestovsky (Cross) Island name. One of them is telling that before even the city was founded there was a Chapel on this island, topped by a large crucifix. The next one tells that when the private residence of Tsarevna Natalya Alexeevna was being raised, there was a huge crucifix found below the ground at the construction site. There also is a version that the Island was names so after the cross-shaped lake located in its center.

Martynova embankment appeared at the end of XIX century and previously carried the name of Srednyaya (Middle) Nevka embankment. In July 1939 it was renamed after Michael Martynov, Baltic naval forces officer and the participant of the Civil War.
