Historical overview

Several urban legends tell the story of the Krestovsky (Cross) Island name. One of them is telling that before even the city was founded there was a Chapel on this island, topped by a large crucifix. The next one tells that when the private residence of Tsarevna Natalya Alexeevna was being raised, there was a huge crucifix found below the ground at the construction site. There also is a version that the Island was names so after the cross-shaped lake located in its center.

Morskoy (Marine) Prospect previously was named Srednyaya Bolshaya Alleya (Middle Big Lane), as far as it passed between Krestovsky and Konstantinovsky prospects. The lane led to the sea, but later the Battery road, which crosses the prospect, overpassed this route and at the end of 1930ies along this long passage the stadium was being constructed. The lane received its’ current name at the year of St. Petersburg 200th anniversary, although it didn’t reach the seashore any more.
